Our client is actively seeking a talented Mechanical Project Engineer to work a hybrid schedule in Denver, CO. This is a fulltime permanent opportunity with our client.

Job Overview:
The Project Engineer on Xcel’s Pressure Test Program supports projects where there is a lack of records to support current maximum allowable operating pressure. Project examples include pipeline and facility pressure tests, derates, pipeline and regulator station replacements, and new valve set installations.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Review engineering drawings to ensure constructability and adherence to Xcel standards and Operations preferences.
  • Gather input from stakeholders (Operations, Operations Engineering, other Xcel Engineering groups, etc.) and implement into design and procedures.
  • Write operational procedures
  • Serve as person-in-charge for tie-in and other critical procedure steps.
  • Coordinate on-site meetings to define scope, plan for land use, and identify constructability issues.
  • Provide input to construction schedule and verify alignment from key stakeholders (HP Ops, Gas Operations Engineering, Construction Contractor, Inspection).
  • Coordinate construction services among various internal and external parties including, but not limited to the following.
    • Xcel Transmission Operations
    • Xcel Distribution Operations
    • Xcel Stopple crew
    • Xcel Cathodic Protection technician
    • Xcel GOTS (electrical and instrumentation group)
    • Construction contractors
    • Material vendors
    • NDE contractors
    • Painting contractors
    • Odorization contractors
    • LNG tank temp feed contractors
    • Other utility companies, especially third-party gas distribution companies like Black Hills, Atmos, etc.
    • Landowners
  • Provide "on-call" engineering support during construction. (Includes some occasional night and weekend work.)
  • Travel to work sites within the state of Colorado to support design and construction. (Up to approximately 25% travel)
  • Create and maintain SAP WOs following a poorly documented and constantly changing process.
  • Request POs be issued to various external contractors for materials and services.


  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) degree or related discipline.
  • 4-8 years of professional experience required. Experience in oil & gas/utility industry required.
  • Thorough knowledge of P&ID’s.
  • Good knowledge of industry codes and standards ASME/ANSI/API/NFPA/CSA codes (ASME B31.3, B31.4, B31.8, 49 CFR 192 & 195).

Job Requisition #

A reasonable estimate of the pay range for this role is $130,000 - $150,000 per year.

The disclosed pay range estimate has not been adjusted for the applicable geographic differential associated with the location at which the position may be filled.  The compensation decisions are dependent on the facts and circumstances of each case, such as skills and experience levels.
