Tenure-Track Instructor/Assistant/Associate Professor, Interior Design
The Richmond Institute for Design + Innovation (RIDI) at Western Michigan University invites applications for a tenure track Instructor/ Assistant /Associate Professor, Interior Design beginning no later than August 2023. This is an academic year appointment with appropriate rank corresponding to experiences and qualifications.
RIDI exists to advance pioneering, positive, and productive design solutions to real-world problems by partnering learners with professionals in support of the creative economy in SW Michigan and beyond. This faculty position is key to advancing RIDI’s mission.
Teach courses within the professional curriculum, such as design studios, lectures, seminars, multi-disciplinary courses, and workshops.
Work with Director of RIDI and entire RIDI faculty and staff team to maintain both NASAD and CIDA accreditations.
Produce research findings and place publications in scholarly journals in the discipline and/or exhibitions of peer-reviewed and professional works.
Present research findings at peer-reviewed conferences and professional gatherings both nationally and internationally.
Seek out, secure, and participate in externally funded applied research/grants/sponsored studios that involve opportunities for collaborative student engagement.
Support pedagogies in sustainability, applied technology and social-based design with the development of coursework and engagement of research in such areas.
Assist in annual program events such as portfolio review, lecture series, design charrettes, and CIDA archiving.
Service to the unit, college, and university.
A graduate degree in Interior Design, a design-related discipline, or international equivalent (Ph.D., MFA, M. Arch., MBA or equivalent) with a minimum of one studio-based degree in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, a design-related discipline, or international equivalent. A studio-based Bachelor’s degree in interior design, interior architecture, or a design-related field with at least ten years of work experiences will be considered for at least Instructor status, with graduate degree completion expected within four years of start date in order to move to Assistant Professor.
Professional certifications and/or credentials complimentary and supportive of professional curriculum (i.e. NCIDQ, NCARB, or WELL AP).
Demonstrated ability to teach at least one design studio each semester as appropriate.
Demonstrated interdisciplinary teaching or professional experiences working on interdisciplinary teams.
Focused expertise, research or experience in design practice relating to at least one of the following areas:
illumination and lighting design
materials sciences and application of materials to interior environments
design communication methods, styles and presentation
Undergraduate Program: The NASAD and CIDA accredited major and minor programs currently have 90+ students currently enrolled. The long-established programs recently transferred from the College of Education and Human Development to the College of Fine Arts. Along with this faculty-supported transfer comes the pending renaming of the program to Interior Architecture and Design. It is anticipated this will take effect Fall 2023.
RIDI: Founded in 2017, comprised of two vibrant design programs, nearly 200 students, and a core faculty of six (6), the Richmond Institute for Design + Innovation is the newest unit in the College of Fine Arts. The product design program is NASAD accredited. The interior design program is both NASAD and CIDA accredited. The College: The College of Fine Arts overlooks Fountain Plaza and consists of the Gwen Frostic School of Art, Department of Dance, School of Music, Department of Theatre, and the Richmond Institute for Design + Innovation. All units are nationally accredited. The College of Fine Arts is housed in Dalton Center, Richmond Center for Visual Arts, South Kohrman Hall, the Gilmore Theatre Complex, and portions of both Central Kohrman and North Kohrman halls. Facilities for the learning and practice of the arts are exceptional in the Mid-America region. Students perform in three theatres, a multi-media room, 400 seat recital hall, and dance performance studio mounting over 400 performances annually. New visual art studies, motion capture lab, specialized computer workrooms, and other laboratories are professionally equipped. Compensation: Total compensation for this position includes tuition discount and remission, TIAA retirement and tax-deferred savings plans, BCBS health care benefits, and a salary range of $42,100 – mid-$60,000s. This will vary based on credentials, experiences, and qualifying rank (Instructor/Assistant/Associate Professor).
